The World Is Better Open

Joseph Mark Orimoloye • Aug 10, 2023

In today's digital age, where software powers almost every aspect of our lives, there's a quiet revolution that's been taking place—one that's fundamentally changing how we interact with technology and with each other. This is the revolution of Open Source Technology, and I passionately believe that it's making our world a better place .

The Spirit of Generosity

At its core, open source stands for a simple yet profound idea: sharing. Developers, both individuals and teams, offer up their code for free, allowing anyone in the world to use, modify, and distribute it. This spirit of generosity doesn't just stop at sharing code; it extends to knowledge, ideas, and solutions. The very essence of open source resonates with the belief that when we share, we grow collectively.

The Free Software Movement

Consider the plethora of free software available to us, from operating systems like Linux to web servers like Apache, and databases like MySQL. All of these started as ideas in someone's mind, and thanks to open source, they have evolved into tools that power the internet and much of the world's IT infrastructure. The beauty? These tools are available to anyone. Whether you're a student in a developing country or a startup with a tight budget, open source ensures you have access to world-class software, for free.

A Breeding Ground for Innovation

Think about the tech giants we admire today—many of them have their roots in open source. Companies like Red Hat, Canonical, and even big players like IBM and Microsoft, have embraced open source to drive innovation. It's no exaggeration to say that open source has become a breeding ground for innovation, pushing boundaries and continually evolving to meet the needs of its users.

Job Creation and Economic Boost

Beyond the software itself, open source has played a pivotal role in job creation. From developers, system administrators, and IT consultants, to those in sales, marketing, and education, millions of people around the world owe their livelihoods to open source. It’s not just about jobs but about creating a global community where knowledge is power, and everyone has the opportunity to learn and earn.

A Culture of Collaboration

What truly sets open source apart, for me, is the culture it cultivates. A culture where collaboration is not just encouraged but is a way of life. It’s where seasoned professionals mentor newcomers, where a developer from one part of the world collaborates with another whom they've never met, united by a shared passion and purpose. This global collaboration breaks down barriers, fosters diversity, and ensures that the best ideas—regardless of where they come from—rise to the top.

Making the World Open

In conclusion, the world is undeniably better open. Open source is more than just a method of software development; it's a philosophy, a movement, and a way of life. It teaches us that when we work together, share freely, and prioritize community over competition, we can achieve greatness.

So, the next time you use a piece of free software or read an article on an open-source platform, take a moment to appreciate the vast community behind it. And maybe, just maybe, consider joining this community. Because the world is better open, and together, we can keep it that way.

It's not uncommon to feel afraid when contemplating our dreams, ambitions, and the unknowns of life. This fear we all feel is often magnified by societal pressures that dictate who we "should" be and what we "ought" to accomplish in life. The fear of failure looms large, making us second-guess even the thought of aiming for something greater or different. We then bury our dreams and lofty aspirations, afraid and apprehensive to give them the sunlight they deserve. But what if we dared to act on our dreams. . . what if we dared to venture into the unknowns of life? I believe a realm of limitless possibilities awaits those of us brave enough to pursue our passions. Imagine transforming yourself from an ordinary individual into a software programmer. Or becoming a help desk technician, or a systems administrator, simply because you tapped into your latent passion and faced the unknown. It all starts with being bold enough to "Dream Open." When we embrace this openness, we don't just become open-minded; we evolve into "Open People." Unafraid, we begin to dismantle societal expectations and remove our own self-imposed limitations. By daring to be open-minded, we begin to open doors to collaborations, to resonating with like-minded individuals, and to leveraging the collective strength that lies in sharing and extending the boundaries of what's possible. It's about breaking down our mental barriers and extending the transformative power of being open to all!
